Pim Jacobs and Astrud Gilberto - Bossa Nova conquering the Netherlands 1962
Pim Jacobs
Happy birthday, Willem Bernard "Pim" Jacobs!
Pim Jacobs, "home garden greenhouse garden home" project at PHL Hasselt/UHasselt (B), 2013 selected for the EAP, Euregional Prize for Architecture (for graduation students of RWTH Aachen, FH Aachen, ULG Liège, MMA+ Maastricht & PHL/Faculty of Architecture & Arts UHasselt Hasselt
"It was raining in Sint-Truiden. He quickly put his shoppings in the alcove, drove along the overgrown concrete wall, parked his car in the underground car park and ascending to the ground floor he ended up in a totally different climate, secure and warmer than 'outside'. He turned his head and saw a hand potting new plants in the greenhouse; on his right he saw Joseph sowing new seeds, carrots probably, as he has some difficulty with his eyesight. He continued following the steel cables greeting a cyclist as he passed by. He opened a first door seeing his son Matisse playing with Marcel the cat. Josephine, his next door neighbour, was watching them. He grabbed an orange from his orange tree entering his home by the little staircase. Through the glass wall containing air purifying plants, he saw Matisse storming in followed by Marcel hobbling behind. A bit further on the croppers stopped working. Suddenly he felt a sunbeam caressing his arm. He looked up at the sky and saw the clouds disappear. He changed plans : dining on the roof overviewing the park. They had dinner under the immense baby blue welkin. Being contented he fell asleep with Marcel on his lap."

'I Love Blues', by The Pim Jacobs Trio, Feat. Wes Montgomery
Willem Bernard (Pim) Jacobs (1934-1996) came from a talented Dutch musical dynasty: his mother and father both involved in the arts for a profession and hobby, respectively, and his brother Ruud Jacobs played bass and tenor sax. He started playing piano at age six, and he eventually triumphed in a jazz competition and made performing and composing his life. Jacobs started his first piano trio in 1954, heavily influenced by the introspective styles of American pianists such as Bud Powell and Bill Evans. Typically for the Dutch jazz scene, opportunities arose for the pianist to head up rhythm sections backing visiting stars from the States. Pim Jacobs has been associated with Dutch tours involving reed players Stan Getz, Lucky Thompson, Tony Scott, and, featured today, guitarist Wes Montgomery.
Subsequently, Jacobs began performing regularly with his wife, vocalist Rita Reys, their typical program featuring arrangements of vocal music standards as well as bebop material. Jacobs also crafted scores for both narrative and documentary films.
Today's clip is recorded on April 2nd, 1965 in the Dutch VPRO television studio. It's an excerpt from the Jazz Icons DVD 'Wes Montgomery Live In '65', filmed beautifully in intimate studio settings, with Wes leading three different lineups (in Holland, Belgium and England) through some of his best-known tunes.
