The words, for the record, are lightning, pineapple, and squid. I now present to you a newly-discovered creature of the sea.
The Pineapple Squid, or ananas teuthida, was confirmed Tuesday as the newest in a line of deep sea-dwelling cephalopods to be discovered in the waters off the coast of Australia this month.
Earning the unique nickname through a series of yellow-orange ridged spikes found along the dorsal side of the body, the Pineapple Squid resides at depths of approximately 1800 meters.
One unusual facet of this animal’s existence presents itself in the form of a unique ability: The Pineapple Squid possesses capabilities of electrocution.
Lacking the ink sac that typically characterizes the squid, this creature instead possesses an organ which has effectively been dubbed as a, “lightning sac.”
When threatened, the Pineapple Squid is able to rapidly discharge multiple volts of electricity using the tentacles as a means of conduction. Scientists hypothesize that this defense mechanism has evolved over thousands of years as this invertebrate has migrated further into the depths of the ocean.
