This was a political photo for my dad’s campaign in New Jersey. My brother Pat and I built forts in the woods from the construction waste site that was near our home. One day, when Pat was 8, he found medical syringes in that landfill. My dad took them to a town council meeting confronting them about why dangerous medical waste was there. From that moment on Dad was fighting seriously crooked land developers who were dumping medical waste, dead animals and toxic chemicals into the local land fills. People who lived near some of these were getting sick or their kids were having developmental issues. This was the family photo for his pamphlets that we would go door to door to distribute before the elections. This part of the day was pretty calm but before we got here we had a serious adventure. My brother Patrick, my best friend Lori Bender, me and then my younger brother @as_seen_in_austin. My sister was probably there and I feel like our dog Jasper was too but she might have been walking him... My dad had us all packed in a big brown station wagon like always. Since we were kids we’d go into the Pine Barrens and he’d literally beer off the Main highway and into the sandy one lane roads that would lead us through the woods. We had no idea where we’d end up but it was always something. There were always puddles and he’d maneuver that station wagon like it was a compact car to get around them or have to back up and go down a different trail because they were too deep. This day we came up on one and he eyed it. He told us to hold on to the dog and cooler as he started backing up. He got to a point, took it out of reverse, and then gunned it... it’s all slow motion for me now as somehow that station wagon took flight and we jumped this huge puddle, sand coming up over the hood, and everyone scream laughing all at the same time. We made it over that huge puddle... Later down the trail, we crossed a bridge with some guys fishing and they looked at us like we were nuts... I saw a sign when we got to the other side that said the bridge was unsafe to drive on.
