Here is the pen drawing of my next painting, coontie with atala butterflies. I wanted a little bit more of a graphic look for these next few paintings and so gravitated toward the dark outline which I will complete with some washy, some detailed watercolor later :) that paintbrush has a bow on it because I was trying to decide how I wanted to tie the cootie branches together (I went with the twine instead) #coontie #foliage #botanical #florida #pinerocklands #atala #butterfly #scientificillustration #miami #floridawildlife #watercolor #art #drawing #illustration #wip

Yesterday I went on the pine rockland field trip with the FNPS to Navy Wells in Homestead, visiting sites that had been recently burned and teeming with fascinating plants growing from almost solid rock. In the absence of fire, the tiny plants shown here get smothered by the larger shade-throwing bushes and trees, which is why there was such a diversity of them here. Not a bush in sight! The importance of fire is one of the most fascinating things to me about Florida. In a state so wet and semi-tropical it seems ridiculous that habitats here would depend on regular fire burning the underbrush!
