Dire son nom, où et quand on est né, d'où viennent nos parents, où on habite. Les années s'égrènent, l'enfance s'étire, souvent dans la violence, la mère qui se drogue, ou qui vous hait parce que vous ressemblez trop au père. L'école, les bandes, la recherche d'une identité - les vexations, les discriminations, la violence encore. Les années s'égrènent, et les déménagements permanents, parce que les loyers sont trop chers, pour fuir la spéculation, la misère, pour tenter sa chance ailleurs. Sept voix, sept jeunes new yorkais (Edwyn, Monica, Syl, Mohammad, De-Andrea, Porscha, Rafael) se racontent avec simplicité, avec coeur, en une polyphonie qui devient - dans la communion des émotions - une symphonie. Jeunesses battues mais fortes, debout et fières. On admire leur dignité, leur maturité, leur belle énergie - rien n'est facile, ils le savent - mais ils n'ont ni rancoeur, ni haine. Ils croient en eux-mêmes et en la fraternité de l'humain.
