HE’S NOT USED TO ANYONE PAYING ATTENTION TO HIM, REALLY. he’s too easily blended into the background, the guy you walk past without giving second thought to. but when she approaches him --and no less compliments him-- it takes him by surprise. she’s carol, someone the whole school knows and looks up to --what the hell is she doing bothering with him?

he almost doesn’t answer, looking around to find someone else near him --someone else he’d assume she’d talk to. but upon finding no one, he passes her a deer in the headlights kind of look, answering, ❛ i like your uh --everything. ❜

HE STILL CAN’T BELIEVE WHO HE’S TALKING TO. it’d been six whole years since he last her and here she is, hallway of the same clinic waiting on her son to finish his speech therapy session. the world truly was quite small, though he’s starting to get the sneaking suspicion that he’s far happier to see her than she is to see him. it’s the stiffness about her, this awkwardness that surrounds her where usually there is none. 

but when she says that to him he can hear the affection lacing her tone --he knows her well enough to tell when she’s being playful, six years be damned. it makes him smile on an instant, that same kind of boyish grin he’d give her whenever their dynamic duo swept at beer pong in college. seeing her is like the best kind of memory, a familiar warmth that even he didn’t know how much he missed until now.

IT’S ALWAYS LIKE THIS, the two of them casually avoiding each other on the first day back while making eye contact across the room whenever possible at the same time, unintentionally creating tension so thick he could cut it. and he’d tell all the other counselors that he wasn’t sure where they stood after a summer apart, a spark kept alive by the occasional text or shared photo during the rest of the year --but he knows this song and dance too well. 

and he knows damn well no one at that ‘summer bash’ party was surprised to see him approach her at last as the DJ’s song hit a familiar tune. hand outstretched, he quirks a brow in her direction, beckoning her to take it.  ❛ whaddaya say, stranger --can i have this dance? ❜

but the second she takes it, he draws her in closer, taking the leap and just deciding to kiss her straight on. after all, it’s been 10 months since the last time he was able to and he’s not foolish enough to start wasting time now. ❛ and before you ask, yes i still have two left feet but you already said yes so you can’t take it back now. ❜

HOW DID HE GET HERE? how did a guy like him even end up working on a movie set, let alone the kind that she was on. she was larger than life, and he remembers her show being on television when he was a kid. and he’s just...her ex co-star’s brother. the guy who does technical work on her new set.

but here she is, asking him to stay.

maybe he’s just feeling the depression of his engagement falling through, but she’s right about another thing: the draw he feels to her is magnetic. the strength of her character is awe-inspiring, and every time he learns something else about her past it makes him want to protect her even more. maybe that’s what this was...they’ve recognized a loneliness in each other that feels so familiar, they can fill it with each other.
