This is a fellow Tumblr user who has helped me immensely to try to understand the fundamentals of Lolita.
I explained that I was an outsider to the Lolita subculture, yet i am completely fascinated and admire it. I touched upon that i wish to make a garment that is a bit over the top and i use knitting and sewing. She broke down the sub-styles within Lolita as i began to find out that the Lolita sub-style that most mimics the work i have created is Decora and sweet Lolita. She broke down exactly what is need for the outfit.
The email she kindly sent me,
Hello,
You're very welcome! There was actually a style of lolita known as Deco Lolita back in 2008-2010, combining both decora and sweet lolita. I've provided examples of the style in the attached files. I apologize if the images look smaller than usual.
As for a complete deco lolita outfit, there are different layers to know and understand. The first layer includes any underwear, as well as an undershirt and bloomers.
The next layer includes your blouse (a common lolita blouse has a peter pan collar with lace and frills), bell-shaped petticoat(s), and socks/tights.
Now comes the part where the dress comes into play. If you plan to make a jumperskirt, you need to have a blouse. If your dress has sleeves, however, the blouse does not need to be included.
Next comes the hair, headbow, and other hair accessories in order to bring out the decora influence! I don't know if you plan on using a wig, but for deco lolita, it's preferred to either have a straight, black wig with a fringe or a pastel wig with a fringe as well. I recommend using plastic hair clips since it looks more presentable, but then adding a few larger clips of any material to the headbow.
Next, you add a ton of jewelry, accessories, and pins to create the coord over the top! Also include a bag and shoes as well.
