The Pinwheel Cluster is the first of three bright star clusters in Auriga recorded by Messier, although this cluster was discovered by Giovanni Hodierna (1597-1660) before 1654. The Pinwheel Clusters is relatively young at only 25 million years old and is very similar to the Pleiades.
