Hip Hop: A Voice or a Career

Rap music was once the voice of an entire race. It use to serve as a way for those that did not have a voice to finally be heard. Some enthusiast today would go as far to say that rap music was created to kind of educated the outside world. Well those that were ignorant to the fact. Rappers or better yet Emcee’s used it as a tool, to give the world a glimpse of what it was like living in the ghetto as well as being Black in America. Music as a whole was created to serve as a window, or better yet a way of communication. So it should not come to a surprise that some of the first music to be produced through the hip hop culture would appear to be overly violent or filled with lyrics of everyday people struggling just to make a dollar. It’s no surprise that white America would soon label rap music as a taboo. They would soon claim that it was too violent or promoting. That’s the things though, rap music when it was created did not have that intent, but it’s reflection was that of a violent nature only because of the experiences and the environment that these rappers were subject too. Rap music took a very blunt approach in delivering the message. So much so people were scared to open their eyes to the horror that these emcee’s and DJ’s were forced to live in for a better part of their life. And as America knows (whether they liked to acknowledge it or not) life anywhere between the 60’s and 80’s was not pleasant. Shit, life now is hard enough.. Somewhere from then to now hip hop stopped being so much concerned with mirroring it’s environment and starting being about showing off their riches and etc. Within the last decade hip hop has seen not only a rise in audience but also a rise in rappers. Hip Hop was shelling out rappers just about every week. They would pop up make a record that would seem to impact the whole industry then sudden disappear just as fast. Rappers are much more concerned with making money then using rap music as a platform. Artists are not writing their own music. they’re using other people’s rhythm and style of rapping. There are very little rappers that are concerned with using their music as s platform to spotlight different social and political injustices. Just to name a few “more popular ones” we got Kendrick Lamar, Jermaine Cole and Joey Badass. Even though these rappers are just part of a bigger group, people have mockingly put them into a genre known as Conscience Rap. Oddly as this may sound this article is not a knock on let’s say trap music or party music. All Hip Hop is important to the world, this is just simply a spotlight on how rappers are now more concerned with how to get rich quick. Now I don’t remember if I made this of if someone not so important told me this but, “Real hip hop lies with broke rappers”.
