What does a Hydrographic Survey Involve?
A hydrographic survey involves the scientific measurement and description of the physical features of any navigable body of water – as well as the bottom topography (ocean floor, riverbed, etc.). A hydrographic survey may be performed on any navigable body of water including oceans, rivers and lakes. This type of survey is typically utilized to ensure safe navigation of various waters by marine vessels – and is also utilized commercially to facilitate offshore oil and gas exploration and drilling, marine construction, dredging, installation of subsea cables and more.
Hydrographic surveys are important to maintaining safe shipping lanes on rivers and coastlines. These surveys must be repeated periodically, as both natural currents and large storms such as hurricanes are continually shifting silt on the ocean floor – which may accumulate and cause dangerous conditions or obstructions. In addition, hydrographic surveys may be utilized to locate sunken vessels or other wreckage that may occur when there is a disaster at sea.
The history of hydrographic survey techniques dates back many centuries. The earliest techniques involved the use of a sounding pole in shallow waters or a sounding line (a thin rope with a lead weight on the end) used in greater depths. These methods of depth measurement are very labor and time intensive – and are rarely used in modern times.
Today, hydrographic surveys are commonly performed utilizing highly advanced technology including both side scan and multi-beam SONAR (sound navigation and ranging), GPS and other sophisticated measurement systems. In addition to highly advanced equipment utilized to gather data, the software used to interpret this information plays a vital role in modern hydrographic surveying. After being collected, the data must undergo extensive processing in order to provide the precise information that is pertinent to the final use of the survey.
For example, some hydrographic surveys are utilized to create charts and maps that are vital to maintaining safe shipping lanes. In these instances, the surveys are usually performed by governmental agencies to measure the depth and bottom configuration of specific bodies of water. The data is then utilized to create or update nautical charts or maps.
In other instances, commercial entities such as engineering firms may utilize hydrographic surveying to “look” at the ocean floor in order to facilitate pipeline construction, drilling rig platform construction, dredging or other commercial projects. In this instance, the hydrographic survey data is often utilized to determine not only the depth of the water – but also the composition of the sea floor to differentiate between sand, mud, rock, etc. This is vital in determining the optimum routes for underwater pipelines in addition to other marine construction applications.
