今日で比布のばあちゃんが亡くなって一年が経った。

父方の祖母。

原因は熱中症だった。北海道上川郡比布で34度という高温。外で畑仕事をしてるところだった。

亡くなる前の2017年から、母方の祖父の他界、そして今一番力を入れているプロジェクト「生活図画事件」の経験者の方々の長期取材も相まって北海道を行き来する機会がとても多かった。それもあって来道の度に、比布のばあちゃんとじいちゃんのところへと寄った。多くの方がそうかもしれないが、うちはとにかく父方の実家に帰るということが母方の実家に帰る回数より少なかった。比布という北海道でも行き辛い場所だったことも関係しているように思う。

だけど自分が大人になり様々な方々の人生に興味を持つようになってついには写真家として歩み始めてしまったがためか、当然かもしれないが例外なく、自分の祖父母の人生にも人一倍関心を持つようになった。だからこれからは比布の祖父母と少しでも多くの時間を過ごしたいと泊まり込んだりしては2人の静かな暮しにとにかくシャッターを押し続けた。

それがあっけなく、祖母がいなくなってしまい、祖父はトマトを育てることをやめてしまった。

もう既に1年が経ったのに、この悲しみはなんなのか。それをどこにぶつけたら良いのか。

いつまでも撮り続けていたかったよ、ばあちゃん。

A year after my grandma’s death. She died with heatstroke on a burningly hot day, with the temperature hitting a 34 degrees Celcius. She was outside planting seeds for the upcoming harvest season.

比布、北海道、2017年8月。

2018年7月31日の夜に一報が入り、その次の日に僕と父は比布に向かった。そしてご近所さんの方で倒れているのを見つけてくれた方からどうやって倒れていたかを聞いた。この場所で、ということだった。

We flew up to Hokkaido immediately from Tokyo after we heard her death. Here is my father on the right, listening to the neighbor who found her lying on the ground.

そしてこの期限切れの免許と共に、じいちゃんの若い頃の写真を自分のカードケースに入れてたのを知った。

Found out that my grandma kept this b/w photo of my grandpa when he was young, in her card case. Don’t know how young but it sure does look old, I mean the photo.

2018年11月、倒れて亡くなっていた場所からは、ばあちゃんが最後に指からこぼした種からのものだろう、大根が成っていた。

November 2018, realized that there were few Japanese white radishes growing from the soil, where my grandma was lying when she passed away.

ばあちゃんが最後に作ってたのは大根だったのか。ありがとう、ばあちゃん。

So it was the Japanese white radish that she was planting. I was just overwhelmed by the power of nature and what my grandma left behind.

Thank you grandma, will always love you and miss you.
