What was Ace's choice in career? The answer is bounty hunting. To understand this, we have to go back to the beginning.

(This was inspired by a famous headcanon.)

Portgas D. Rouge was no normal woman. She was a famous bounty hunter back in her day. The story of her leaving Ace in more awe than the story of the Pirate King. Ace always admires his mother more than his father, so it is no surprise that he chose to become a bounty hunter instead of a pirate.

That was a part of the reason anyway.

You see, despite raising a child, Rayleigh still had his small habit of gambling. As a result, he kept playing slave to get more money. This left Ace annoyed greatly as it made Rayleigh disappear for days. The boy had the brilliant idea to become his buyer once and you know Ds, they are stubborn.

At first, Ace just tried to rob people but the money he got was slow. Then one day, he beat up a pirate crew. Someone on the side made a suggestion to gather their bounties. Hence, the famous bounty hunter Ace of Spades was born.

Alas, Ace did once manage to buy Rayleigh. The old man didn't stop gambling tho.

Let's go back to the start.

The young child who ran away from his noble household dreamed of traveling the sea and being free. So pirate is an obvious choice.

That dream was burned down by the Tenryuubito and the nobles of his kingdom.

So the boy switched his career choice once a new option was introduced to him.

To be a Revolutionary.

The boy didn't hesitate to go with them.

Anyway, Sabo, this Sabo's hatred for nobles ran deeper than the Sabo in canon when he was found by the Revolutionary Army. Why? Because this Sabo never forgets, the hatred for his origin burns through his veins. There were also no brothers to soften the edges of the boy. Unlike in canon where he had no memory, this Sabo remembered yet there was nothing worth remembering. So with all the spite of a child who dared to set sail alone at 10, Sabo fights his way to the top of the Revolutionary Army.

It's obvious, right? The path Luffy chose before even meeting Ace and Sabo in canon was already set. Becoming the Pirate King and fulfilling his dream is what Luffy is ready to set sail to do. That won't change.
