Adelor’s first thoughts went to the many ideal nights out he had already lived.

The wild spring nights of sneaking out into the city with Ju, drinking beer, knowing they had at least three hours before they had to be back. The crisp autumn nights walking drunk and alone through the Graf estate, the forest, the surrounding fields, drinking wine, yelling at the stars and singing out of tune, knowing that he had at least until the next morning until he had to be back. The misty winter nights with Jabbe and Pirmin, running away to the fisher boats, Mainz, even Frankfurt, drinking schnapps, and gambling and fist-fighting with fishers, workers, drunkards, bankers, knowing they only had to be back by the first class of the day. And, of course, the stickily hot summer nights with Irmin, down by the river arm, drinking champagne, joking, laughing, smiling, being happy, knowing that there was nowhere to go back to because there was only here, here, here.

“I don’t know.” he then shrugged. “Going somewhere where I never have to come back?”
