The size of the pit increases with the depth of the pit. This is to allow adequate access for maintenance purposes

900 x 900 is a good size to allow access of maintenance personal and equipment. Once the pit get deeper than 1200 and the pipe diameter is larger than the opening of the pit on top, the pit can be corbelled (made larger at the bottom only).
