Oaxaca - Fin de Año
It's the end of the year and almost time for us to head home. But we still had a few more nights in Oaxaca.
For the evening of the 30th we went back to Pitiona since we had enjoyed the previous night. But it didn't go nearly as well. We were seated on the rooftop again, but right in front of the speaker above the bar playing loud music. We asked if it could be turned down, but nothing happened, so we asked if we could have a different table further away, again nothing. So we finally stood up, took our drinks, said we were going downstairs and did. They did have a table for us by the time we go there and brought the appetizers we had ordered immediately, so that was good. The crab tostada rolls were good, nicely seasoned, although the seasoning was such that the crab was not very ;crabby'. The pig's foot sausage was very bland, in fact it would be considered very bland in Wisconsin. It was dull enough that we didn't finish it.
The main course was grilled octopus in mole. That was very good.
But the issue with the speaker and seating really took the pleasurable effect of the restaurant way down.
As we left we walked down the pedestrian street, Macedonia Alcalá, which in previous years would have been full of people, but it was pretty empty.
For New Year's Eve, we had a reservation at a Spanish restaurant El Olivio. We kept dinner pretty simple just some jamón iberico on toast, and a vegetable flatbread, but splurged on a bottle of Cava. It was nice enough but nothing special.
We left there about 11:15 expecting to see revelers on the street, but the streets were almost completely empty, even Alcalá. They are really staying away from crowds, which is a good thing, but surprising that even informal events like street gathering isn't happening. It's Mexico, so of course at midnight fireworks went off all over town for about a half hour, but really just noise makers, nothing to look at.
