The Victims of the Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting Have Been Identified
On Saturday, October 27, a gunman walked into Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and opened fire, killing multiple people and wounding several others. CNN reported that police officials have since confirmed the names of the 11 victims and that six additional people were injured, including four police officers who were responding to the scene.
According to CNN, the victims were between the ages of 54 and 97, including siblings and one married couple. The names of the victims are as follows: Joyce Fienberg, 75; Richard Gottfried, 65; Rose Mallinger, 97; Jerry Rabinowitz, 66; Cecil Rosenthal, 59; David Rosenthal, 54; Bernice Simon, 84; Sylvan Simon, 86; Daniel Stein, 71; Melvin Wax, 88; Irving Younger, 69.
BuzzFeed News reported that the suspect has been identified as Robert Bowers, a 46-year-old white male living in Pittsburgh, who allegedly had a history of posting anti-Semitic and hateful messages online. According to police officials, Bowers currently faces 29 federal charges, including multiple counts of hate crimes. CNN reported that if convicted of a hate crime, Bowers could potentially face the death penalty.
