What do you think of when you think about ninja? Stealthy, black-clad assassins who run around in the dark and throw shuriken at people, right? What do you think of when you think about ninja video games? If you’re anything like me, you think Ninja Gaiden. Undoubtedly one of the greatest video games of the 8-bit era, if not all time, Ninja Gaiden set the bar of fast-paced ninja gaming. Ninja Senki does well in carrying the torch into the next millenium.
When I work on a game, I want to try to recapture what made the games of my childhood so captivating. I don't necessarily want to redo the exact same thing but they're certainly a huge influence. I don't think that creating something entirely new in terms of gameplay is an absolute necessity. I prefer working from the things I love and then try to iterate from them. For that reason, developers from the 8-bit era are probably my biggest inspiration.
Jonathan Lavigne on his yesteryear videogame development influences. [Unknown date] (via 8 Bit Horse).
Trailer for Wizorb from Pixeltao. I'm not a fan of breakout style games but this looks like there's enough clever variation to make it worth a look.
It’s been a while since I’ve written something about game design. So, I decided to write an article describing how I proceeded when I made the levels of Ninja Senki.
I played many MANY platformers and studied how their levels were built. Doing that kind of research is enlightening and fun ^_^.

Ninja Senki's Super Limited CD-Rom Edition. This post is going up much too late to be of use to anyone, but Jonathan Lavigne was selling this (only 25 printed) and Hayate shirts at Geekfest Montreal this weekend.
If you're new to the site, Ninja Senki is a fun, GBC-style platformer that happens to feature a cameo from a certain smiling mascot. It's also available to download for free to your Windows PC over here. If you enjoy the game enough to want one of these special CD sleeves, you could always try contacting Lavigne at his site to see if there are any unsold copies available.
