A Review of Sasheer Zamata’s “Pizza Mind”
I was pretty excited for this, especially since Sasheer is so underutilized on SNL. Still, I had tempered expectations since this is only her first full length special.
The intro/epilogue was hilarious and well done, perfect for the first-timer. She didn’t performed dressed casually, which I appreciate. She then proceeds to navigate boyfriends and her relationship with her spunky mom.
This is where things get odd... there’s a 2 minutes segment where Sasheer starts narrating this animation of some childhood fantasy of hers. It was cute... but didn’t fit in the landscape of “mama likes big penises” and the origin of her name. So I wasn’t fond of this part. There’s another segment that happens some time later, threw me off guard. It makes sense, the show is cleverly called “Pizza Mind”, so getting glimpses of pieces of her mind are hardly random.
Sasheer proceeds to dive into race issues. And she does it well! Then like many comedians, her show approaches the Trump presidency, bringing up valid points and transitions to diversity in society. There’s this great bit where she impersonates Angela Davis while critiquing Big Hero 6. Throughout the show, I thought she paused a bit too much during jokes, but only cause I noticed it stopped her momentum with the audience as soon as it was starting to build.
Overall, it was an engaging performance. She stays true to the causes she advocates for on a regular basis. Sasheer, you walking tumblr site, if you read this, thanks for making me laugh! And I am looking forward to your next special!!!

Sasheer Zamata on why she loves being behind the scenes and what she’s up to this summer
Sasheer Zamata deserves a summer off — after just under four seasons as a Saturday Night Live cast member (check out some of her best SNL appearances here), this past May she parted ways with the sketch show, which has a notoriously demanding shooting schedule. But just because Zamata has the chance to take a break, doesn’t mean she’s laying low; the actress, writer, improviser, stand-up, and…

The company I work for is letting me write the newsletter, where I gush about Sasheer Zamata's special. It's a pretty cool gig.
