Once Again, the Plain Dealer Gets it Wrong
The Cleveland Plain Dealer recently posted a comment from a fan remarking how the Indians are making a conscious effort to sign a "light hitting" First Baseman in Casey Kotchman. The assumption here is that power (or home runs) equates to winning games. Sorry, but Kotchman gets on base, he seldom strikes out, and is a great defender. The Plain Dealer is not doing the team or its fan base any favors by promoting this idea.
In some ways I think that fans that vent in this manner are lementing the fact that Cleveland is at best a mid-market team. I for one like it that way. Games are more exciting. And it means that the fundamentals that made baseball great well before the Dolans took control of the team are still in play. I would encourage Tribe fans not to forget it.
Additionally, remember 1995-1997. The Indians faced some of the best teams in baseball (Braves, Yankees, Red Sox, Marlins, Orioles, Mariners), all of whom had major star power...and we won. It took a while but sportscasters got on board. I can't wait to see that.
