Here’s my fan art fake ad for Rad Sechrist’s clever project PLASTIC WALRUS, a fictional illustrated/animated skateboard team-turned-real life skate company. As an animation person and (crappy) skater/skate fan, it’s been fun to watch this project develop as a spectator. I love when Rad takes black & white photos of skate spots in LA and draws his awesome character designs over them.
I noticed this kicker-to-gap and waited a few weeks until there were no cars parked in front of it so I could snap some shots. I used a Brian Anderson clip for reference, which inspired the bandaged hand with pink tape. (Even if you aren’t into skate culture, it’s likely BA popped into your news feed a few weeks ago with his big coming out story, which you can watch on VICE or read a cool interview about on Rolling Stone.)
So check out Rad’s tumblr, and the PLASTIC WALRUS instagram and website. Pick up a deck, a shirt, or Kyoko’s sweet trucker hat—either online, or if you’re ever at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra. AND GO SKATE!
