Plastic Princess
Hilary Mantel has recently been slated for commenting on the royals. As to be expected, her comments have been removed from context and completely blown out of proportion into one great big sicky mess. Imagine removing the entrails of a sheep and then blowing them up in a plastic box. That’s a metaphor I think is pretty effective to this situation. I won’t go into a literary analysis of her speech but for god’s sake, read the whole damn thing and if you’re going to make some sort of comment on it, try to have gleaned some of the actual message she was trying to convey. I don’t really understand why Mantel is being lampooned for correctly predicting the future. What she said was going to happen has happened and in my opinion, you don’t get a refund from a fortune cookie that comes true. I love the royals as much as anyone else, I really do, and I really don’t believe that her speech is anti- monarchy or anti-Kate. She’s commenting, I suppose, more on the way we perceive them as a society, rather than a critique of the institution. What’s happened is silly people have oversimplified and exaggerated an article they clearly don’t understand. If you read it as some anti- royalist rant it’s easy to see how her words have been twisted and convoluted into some sort of bitch about the Duchess, but if you do read it as such, you’re an idiot. I’m all for freedom of speech but please stop letting stupid people get their ill informed (and badly formed) replies published.
