3000 Feet and a Knee Length from the Top
After hiking 6 miles into the Grand Canyon, I stood atop Plateau Point. Plateau Point is a projecting cliff overlooking the Colorado River. My three travel companions and I all sat at the edge of the cliff. It was a powerful moment. At first, there was a rush of dangling 1300 feet over the river. Then, I had a grounding realization that my feet in a sense were not dangling at all. Instead, the…

Arizona Trip Day 5- Today I woke up early to hike all the way into the canyon. I took Bright Angel Trail, a long, steep trail pretty much straight down into the canyon. It wasn't too difficult going down, but was one of the most grueling hikes I've ever done coming back up, taking into account the extreme heat (around 100 degrees) and the steep incline. The hike was beautiful going down, and when I got to Indian Garden Spring, a campground where I was supposed to finish my hike and turn around, I was feeling fine and decided to go an extra 1.5 miles to Plateau Point. This turned out to be a great decision, as the views from plateau point were some of the best, if not the best I'd ever seen. I got to see the Colorado River for the first time, which was incredible, and I had a 360 degree view of colorful cliffs and the great expanse of the canyon. I ended up hanging out there for over an hour because it was so beautiful I couldn't get myself to leave, even though it was hot and there was no shade. I got to meet a bunch of people who came and left during the time I stayed there. I met a gay French couple, though we talked in English because I didn't know how to throw in that I speak French so we could speak in French if they wanted. I met a girl from Virginia who was doing a cross country road trip with her friend. Everyone was really nice and we all shared this experience of seeing these views at the point that not many people reached because not many people physically could. When I finally tore myself away from Plateau Point, I made the long, grueling hike back up to the top, about 6.3 miles and 2,938 ft of elevation away. It really tired me out but it was completely worth it.
