One for the record books
In cases you didn’t notice ...
in Friday night’s National League Championship game, Will Smith (a catcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers) hit a crucial home run off Will Smith (a pitcher for the Atlanta Braves).
Two “Wills”; two “Smiths.”
It was a shot that made all us nerds of baseball (a game steeped in arcane statistics) wonder: Has anything like that ever happened before?
There actually is an answer and it’s No. Never before in the history of postseason MLB baseball had two players with the same name faced each other.
By the way, I’m thoroughly enjoying the play-offs. As it stands, the Tampa Bay Rays will represent the American League in the World Series, which will start on Tuesday. The National League team will be determined today in a game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves.
