One of Ophelia’s favorite hobbies is reading. Her father has a large library in his house and she’ll often sit in one of the too large chairs with a large volume-her reading tastes are quite diverse. She’ll read histories, novels, plays, religious texts, and so forth-she often also reads her prayer book before going to sleep, as well.
Ophelia enjoys sketching while her brother practices fencing-though it’s much rarer that she’ll watch her brother fence now (he always seems to be abroad, after all!), it was a hobby she kept when she was younger. She had shown an interest in fencing as a young child, but after her father forbade her, she contented herself with sitting at her brother’s practices. She would often bring her sketchbook and focus on an ornament or a statue if he practiced in the garden-while Ophelia does not consider herself a master artist, she is quite good and will often draw portraits when she can.
Ophelia also adores needlework. It was her mother who taught her how to mend clothing and work on samplers. She will often make someone a sampler as a present-her favorite subjects to stitch are flowers. She finds needlepoint relaxing and it is something that she can do while other ladies are in the same room without her seeming disrespectful.
However, Ophelia’s favorite hobby is flower picking and tending to her garden. Ever since she was a little girl, her mother would take her to go pick wildflowers and taught her to care for one particular rose bush in their garden-to this day, she regularly tends to it. [It is her special rose bush that simply makes her feel as if her mother is right beside her.] Ophelia also will go off sometimes to pick flowers-much to her father’s dismay-and will return much later in the day with an entire bouquet of them to decorate the house.
