Jessica Tsai Three Lessons from Goldilocks by Jimmy Chen Is the porridge too hot? Too cold? Or just right? I don’t really care. I just know that Goldilocks is pretty darn smart. Lesson 1: Taking Risks and Taking Initiative She was lost in the woods somewhere and she needed food and rest. She had to weigh her options – either continue straight home before it gets dark, or make short pitstop into the unknown. What does she do? She breaks into the three bears’ house. That takes balls. Like entrepreneurship, uncertainty is high. She didn’t know bears lived in the house, but she took the initiative anyways because there was an opportunity and its doors were wide open, like literally! Lesson 2: Pivoting Whilst in the house, she tries the porridge, the chairs, and the beds until she found the one that fit her just right. Entrepreneurship is rarely about having a solid business plan and executing it perfectly. Often, the successful startups are ones that pivot around the original idea. They change their plans because they find out the original idea was not the one users needed. In fact, pivoting is a very good way to deal with uncertainty. That’s how Goldilocks was able find the things that were just right for her. Lesson 3: Little Bit of Luck After sleeping the bed that was “just right,” Goldilocks leaves. The bears come back and they scream in horror at their eaten porridge, broken chairs, and ruffled beds. Even when she found the things that were “just right,” they were just right for the moment. She still realized that her long-term goal was to get home. Goldilocks fully took advantage of the bears’ inability to lock the door to their house, but when it was time to leave, she left. She was lucky that she wasn’t eaten by the bears. (See the original post here)

Christopher Franco BOX – a short play by Benjamin Teh Characters - Tom - Amanda - Susan - Brent The foursome sit in a circle, a table with a box in the middle. TOM So…who wants to open it? AMANDA Bags not. SUSAN Bags not. BRENT If you make me open it, I’m gonna kick your ass. SUSAN brays like a donkey. AMANDA smacks her over the head and pushes BRENT back into his chair when he makes to kick SUSAN. TOM So I guess I’m going to open the box then. TOM creeps forwards, and with each step the other three lean forward, unaware they are all holding their breath collectively. TOM traces a finger along the top of the box, and the other three keep leaning forwards, until BRENT falls out of his chair and startles TOM, who leaps back from the box. AMANDA and BRENT stare at TOM’S frightened expression in bemusement. SUSAN marches forward. SUSAN Oh for fuck’s sake, you retards. How hard can it to opening a shitty box? SUSAN opens the box. Nothing happens. TOM Well, that was disappointing. BRENT I’m going to bed. I cannot believe you three woke me up for this. BRENT leaves. AMANDA Night Tom. SUSAN Night Tom. They hug him simultaneously, then he turns around – he knows the ritual, and they hug him again. AMANDA Can we kill him tonight? SUSAN Please Tom? TOM Not tonight girls, you know the drill. We wait until the box takes the first bite, then we bury the box. AMANDA How did it find us so quickly this time? SUSAN It usually takes years. TOM I guess it was hungry. -fin.
