One more PlayPlay 2 disc for the ages until I go out and track down the remainder. Unlike Volume 0, which I uploaded earlier tonight, this actually has a good amount of playable demos for a pretty diverse range of games. The other main highlight is probably the developer interview for Tekken 4, although I personally appreciate the weird life advice that the title screen dispenses as soon as you turn this on. Also included in this is the April 2002 edition of the PlayStation Index, which is essentially a software catalog of PlayStation games released up until that point. Its inclusion is the reason why the archive is much bigger than normal by PS2 standards. Though I bundled them together into one archive for the sake of personal convenience, if there’s demand for it, I’ll try to split it out into two separate archives, one for each disc, instead.

It’s been a little while since I’ve uploaded one of these PS2 PlayPlay discs, which have something of an interesting history you can read about in my upload for Volume 3 here. As the inaugural entry in the series for the console, this first one is somewhat anticlimactic, especially in comparison to Volume 3, in that there’s not really a whole lot of playable content; essentially you’ll just find a tech demo for Gran Turismo 3 and a whole bunch of trailers and ads, although some of them are admittedly delightfully surreal, especially the Crash Bash ones. Anyway, catch a full listing of the contents below:

I know I’m still not done uploading all the backlog of PS1 demo discs that I have, but this PS2 demo disc was too good not to share as soon as I got it! In a nutshell, the PlayPlay discs were a series of demo discs that Sony Japan sent out to members of the PlayStation Club, basically their version of a Club Nintendo before there was a Club Nintendo, but somewhat less glamorous. The PS1 discs are probably a little more famous overall, but the PS2 ones are well worth your while even just as historical trinkets, containing all sorts of developer interviews, hard to find ads, and more! This PlayPlay disc in particular is special because it contains a really rare demo for Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 1/Disaster Report and there are a lot of little things about it that are different from the final game! Really exciting stuff!

But even if you’re not into that, there’s a lot of other fun stuff on this disc to enjoy, including an interview with Yu Suzuki on Virtua Fighter 4, an MGS2 demo, and a lot of PlayStation commercials Sony commissioned over the years! Check out the full content listing below!
