In all seriousness, however, it's something that doesn't really occur to him until much later in life. He goes on dates and assumes that it doesn't work out because he's a workaholic, because that makes sense to him. He's a teacher and a scientist. In his mind, the only thing he could be IS a workaholic. He's got papers to grade, lesson plans to write, he doesn't have time for a dog, let alone a partner of any kind. When he says "and now she's with Mark" while talking to Rocky about relationships, it's not because he's still bitter about it. He's just sad it didn't work out the way either of them wanted it to. They both wanted something they couldn't give each other in a traditional, heteronormative relationship, and he's not super beat up over it because he's just. Not that interested in that kind of relationship. Other teachers have tried to set him up on blind dates and he was resigned to it for awhile because it gave them something to do and he felt bad saying no outright. He doesn't have anything against a traditional relationship. It's just not something he's actively seeking out.
