Murphy’s hair was hanging in front of his face as he sat across from you, eating today’s lunch. It was incredible how every little thing he did made you fall in love with him. It didn’t matter what he was doing, how he looked, or the nature of the situation. You had seen him at his absolute lowest and still felt like he placed all the stars in the sky.
Although now, Murphy was really improving. He had been through the ringer with everyone on the Ground. They blamed him for their issues, exiled him, and believed he would never grow into someone useful. His aspiration for redemption attracted you and you were the first to forgive his murky heart.
The best part is that you knew he felt the same. He never told you, and you doubted that he ever would, but it was obvious. There had been times when Murphy’s hand brushed against yours and lingered a little longer than it should have. When he offered to get a jammed bullet out of your gun but spent most of his time checking to see if you were watching him. When someone misspoke to you and he delivered a witty remark, causing them to berate him for being a traitor, rather than continuing to hurt you. It was inconspicuous to everyone around you, but nobody else needed to know.
“Y/N. Y/N!” Raven shouted, snapping you out of your trance. You immediately noticed Murphy smirking at you. Your cheeks grew red as you realized that you had been staring at him the entire time.
“Ugh, gross. I’m trying to eat,” Raven mumbled, stabbing a piece of lettuce with her fork.
Being friends with Raven and having a thing for Murphy was controversial at best. When you told her you had an inkling of feeling for Murphy, she didn’t talk to you for a week. She was left with a lifelong ailment that Murphy so generously gifted her. Although she insisted that she was over it now, she didn’t miss out on a chance to put him down. She referred to him constantly as ‘cockroach’ instead of using his real name. That made you uneasy, however, you understood her distaste for him.
The rest of the crew made it over to your table, placing their trays on the table and sitting down. You took note of the empty seat between Murphy and Bellamy.
“What’s up?” Jasper asked, fixing the goggles on his head before eating.
“Eye sex,” Raven responded monotonously, rolling her eyes in the process. Your mouth fell open as you frantically looked from Raven to Jasper to Murphy. Guilt was prevalent by your mannerisms. Murphy wasn’t the least bit phased.
“What? Who?” Bellamy pressed, looking around the cafeteria to find the culprits. Everyone saw Bellamy as a fearless leader, but you knew him for what he really was; an A class drama queen.
“Oh, I bet I know!” Jasper spoke up, rubbing his hands together. Your palms started to sweat as he looked directly at you. “It’s you, isn’t it? You and...Murphy!”
Everyone started to howl at this attempt at a joke. Lots of emotions ran through your body.
Rage. You glared at the people who were supposed to be supportive and working towards a functioning community. Yet here they were, deliberately making a fool of someone, acting as if the thought of someone enjoying his presence was unfathomable.
Heartache. You glanced over to Murphy who had his head hung down. He was an easy target for the entire camp, but everyone wanted to kick him while he was down. It was a game to see who could get the last blow on him. He did not deserve to feel rejected or unwanted. And he most certainly did not get to feel like you were uninterested in him. This could not have been farther from the truth.
Betrayal. You turned towards Raven with stern eyes, your fist clenched at your side. There was a reason that Murphy made his passes so discreet. He was protecting you from being cast out of the clique. You could care less about that right now.
“Real funny, guys,” a faint voice said. Everyone calmed down as Murphy had his chance to speak. You gave him your full attention, hoping that he could feel your unending succor. “I mean, you’re right. All the eye sex, the emotions. We might as well just- get married.”
A feather could have fell to the ground and everyone would have heard it. No one was laughing now as Murphy pursed his lips, waiting for the next person to attack. But you didn’t want that to happen. No, you wanted to jump in on the not serious, but serious, offer.
“I mean, yeah. I feel like that’s the only thing we can do.”
“You’re kidding,” Bellamy whispered in awe. “Right?”
Murphy gave a side smile as he picked up his tray, standing up and swinging his right leg over the bench. “Really? About that stuff? I’m always kidding.”
You felt slightly confused as began to walk off. You figured he would at least keep the banter going. Maybe you took it too far. The thought of upsetting him bothered you.
But just as Murphy started to walk off, he took a couple of steps back and looked at you. “Unless you’re up for it.”
He gave you a wink and continued on his way, heading outside to compost what was left of his food. You pressed your knees together and curled inward, flustered by the blatant flirting. You refused to make eye contact with anyone, trying to avoid the judgement and questions they would have for you.
“So, you and Murphy?” Monty questioned, dragging out every single syllable he could.
“Yeah,” you said incredulously. “Me and Murphy.”
