Sexism in Academia

*While presenting a poster at an international conference*

First Person to Stop: “Where are you from?”

Me:  *senses awkward conversation and feigns innocence* “I’m from XYZ university in the U.S.”

Person: “No where are you FROM? Are you mixed? You’re very pretty.”

Me: *engages in awkward ethnicity conversation*

Person: “Do you model?”

Me: *looks pained but politely says no*

Person: “ Do you act?”

Me: *looks pointedly at research poster right next to me with my name on it* “No, do you have any questions about my research?”
