Plenary 5

I loved this plenary mainly because it took me back to the end of the summer, in Livingston Student Center, listening to a presentation about microaggressions. At the time I had never even heard of the term, but i remember becoming a lot more aware of the the things that I said and thought after hearing the presenters. So this plenary was just an expansion of what I already knew. The best best part about it was that this time, I am proud to say that I had let go of many of the bad habits and terms I used to use prior hearing about microaggressions the first time. I also liked when people started to share their stories and everyone could see how different everyone’s experiences are based on race, class, gender, etc.

Mentor Plenary

The final plenary, for me, was the most interesting because it was controlled by students, and directed at students. I really enjoyed the mock presidential candidate panel because after each one, the discussion panel would ask a question about a discouraging pattern witnessed in the debate, mostly from “Ronald Clump”. It was an informal way to get everyone’s different experiences with topics such as micro and macro aggression to be shared, which instilled a sense of unity within (I think) all of us. Hearing the women in that room talking about their experiences only further proved how despite our differences, we all share some kind of societal disadvantage. While some women’s struggles are more prominent than others, we signify our unity by standing by each other and acknowledging the differences in our suffering, and by snapping in agreement after the deliverance of each person’s two cents.

It was a wonderful way to end a wonderful class.

The Great debate

On Wednesday, April 27th, Knowledge In Power had it’s last plenary which was organized by the mentors. This plenary was actually my favorite(although I  didn’t agree with all sentiments shared) . The plenary was a satire of the presidential race fro 2016 and also had panel discussions that allowed students to share their stories and thoughts on certain issues. It was great to hear everyone’s story and for the most part everyone seemed to be in solidarity. As I mentioned before I didn’t agree with everything but I didn’t speak at plenary because sometimes it’s hard to voice your opinion in a crowd that is pretty much like minded. Either way the plenary was still enlightening.
