TBH I think Spencer's twin DID have a soft spot for Aria, which means her being obsessed with toby made no sense. Everything Alex did in relation to Aria, (Kidnapping Ezra - basically stopping the wedding, lying down next to her saying that they're going to be the 'closest', letting Aria join the A team, keeping Aria out of trouble and danger, trying to separate Aria from her friends) It just doesn't make sense that Alex was obsessed with TOBY. If they went with the plot line that Alex had a crush on Aria and not toby, everything Alex did in relation to Toby, would have been done to sabotage Spencer's life (Kissing him goodbye while he was engaged to Yvonne, having sex with him etc) I feel like they should've done a lot more to show that Alex is obsessed with Toby, because I was watching it thinking that Alex had a thing for Aria until she was saying that Toby is in love with her and stuff. So idk I feel like there's a lot more opportunities with Alex being obsessed with Aria. Because now that the shows finished, we'll never know WHY Alex had a soft spot for Aria. Another question unanswered :/

The masks....I think I figured it out!
It dawned on me last night. What if the reason for the use of masks in season 7 is because a particular cast member (meant to be AD) wasn't available to really film the show? After the reveal, this would allow Marlene to backtrack and say that this cast member was a part of this season but were just wearing masks. Obviously it would mean someone else was really filming for them. Wren, Melissa...?
