Raise your hand if you've ever talked yourself out of trying something new because it's not what people expect from you? Maybe you didn't want to deal with the extra attention? Perhaps you weren't confident that you would like it, let alone anyone else. How about this one: have you ever been afraid to stop doing certain things because it's not what people expect from you? Maybe you're afraid to stop smoking or drinking or eating unhealthy food? What if that is all your friends do? If you change your behavior, will you still be accepted?
Don't Be Afraid to Recreate Yourself
I used to walk around with a victim mentality, waiting for life to disappoint me. Everytime something went wrong on the outside, I went wrong on the inside. My mood was easily affected and if something rubbed me the wrong way, it could easily trigger me to slide into a depression. Sound familiar at all?
What are your triggers?
When you don't make time for things that make you feel good, you're opening the door for needy, insecure behavior to become your method of operation. You can't wait for other people to make you feel good. I've learned this the hard way and I never want to go back to living in a world where everyone else's needs, wants and opinions matter more than my own. Praise and appreciation feel good, but they shouldn't be your motivation for what you do - especially not for things that you do for yourself.
