why pirating jkr’s stuff is still bad
okay by now i think we’re all aware that jk rowling continues to produce content for harry potter. if your first reaction to this is “there’s a new [whatever]???” please just. keep it to yourself. we get it. thanks. yes, there is a new whatever.
but here’s the thing: there are always going to be new whatevers if we continue giving them attention. with every outpouring of (valid and deserved) outrage against jk rowling’s beliefs and harmful new whatevers, there comes a slew of people who then hate-watch, hate-play, hate-whatever just to “prove” how bad it is. guys, this isn’t necessary. and further, it doesn’t matter. it doesn’t MATTER how bad the newest thing is!! it is created by a person who we all know to be racist, antisemitic, transphobic, and more. by even entertaining the possibility that it might be good or just taking a chance on it, you continue to allow her a platform to create and spread her hateful rhetoric. and she will continue.
as long as she gets attention, she will continue. this is why pirating is still harmful; she already has an absurd amount of money from the entire franchise, and at this point what she needs more than that is just the promise of constant, you guessed it, attention. the phrase is true: any attention is good attention. outraged tweets, spiteful twitch streams, even multi-hour video essay spanning across the entire franchise and listing every reason for its offensiveness all count as actions that continue to put her and her platform in the spotlight.
as long as she still has a platform, she can continue to share her hateful and harmful views and continue to convince people that she and the like-minded bigots have a point.
she is not going to stop. she is not going to apologize, or change her mind, or go back on any of the stances she has made public. it is not possible to argue with bigots like her; and for this reason, it is crucial that we stop engagement and interaction altogether. including piracy.
tl;dr as long as jk rowling gets attention for creating things in the harry potter franchise, she will continue doing so. she profits from the attention, so that is what should be taken away above all else. for this reason, we should all entirely cease engaging with any of the content, including piracy, hate-consuming, and other acts of spreading the creations that seem, on a surface level, to give her no revenue or profit.
