The French were mocked for reacting so harshly and lacking a sense of humor. Niall McArdle at Two Paragraphs wrote the headline, “Dirty-Minded Parisians Can’t See the Forest for This Tree.” Mr. Jones wondered whether Parisians are “really so prudish nowadays that they find the idea of a sexually suggestive artwork in the Place Vendôme scandalous? Heck, the square is dominated by a column, a great Napoleonic phallus.”
