William and an unknown woman were sitting on the couch in their New York penthouse when there was a sudden knock at the door. William went to answer it and was shocked to see Ren holding Camille, looking like her mind was a tangled mess of feelings and words.
William: "Ren? What's going on?"
It takes maybe ten seconds before Ren feels confident enough to speak, her voice weak like she's been crying.
Ren: "Please. Just take her, I beg."
William sighs before he reaches out and picks up Camille, who almost instantly falls asleep in his arms.
William: "Poor things exhausted. I don't understand. Why are you here at 6 in the morning? Why are you here at all?"
He can see that Ren would rather not have to explain herself, but regardless, she begins to speak again.
Ren: "Things...things have changed. I thought it all would've kicked in by now, the instincts, the maternal love. But...I don't feel...anything. Anything other than this...empty feeling in my chest, maybe that's where what I'm supposed to feel is supposed to be. But I can't do this. Things have changed, I got accepted onto The Great British Bake Off, I'm leaving for England like...now. I'm not taking her with me. I want you to step up for once and be the dad she deserves, until she can have the mother she deserves as well."
William doesn't know what to say to...any of it. Him and Ren were never close all things considered, their relationship was a whirlwind of nothing but lust, not love or commitment. But he still feels something akin to sympathy for her, he knows he hasn't been a good dad, not even an okay one, he knows how difficult it's been for Ren these past few months, maybe it's his turn to face his responsibilities.
William: "...Okay. Um...go then...uh..."
He doesn't know what else to say so directs his attention to Camille.
William: "Come on then, little monkey, let's get you to bed."
Ren watches as he turns and walks away, Camille looking over her shoulder at him. She hesitates for one final moment before turning and leaving the penthouse...
