mama was waiting to help me get her inside. i laid her down on the bed, and then mama kicked me out. she's holding on, if only by a thread. mama keeps saying she's going to be okay. i think she’s trying to convince herself as much as me.

she was so pale, georgie. but she was breathing, so i yelled for mama and scooped her up. i couldn't run carrying her. the walk home felt like it took a hundred years.

i woke up and she was gone, so i hurried up to follow her. i saw her lying on the sand as i passed the garden. i don't think i've ever run that fast.
