Massive fruit nose all caramelized pretty, weaving black tea, red dust and sandstone into a perfect macrame for your healthiest fern. Magnificent ripeness and nice structure, it all comes through overwhelmingly on the nose. A brilliant wine and I haven't even tasted it yet--I don't need to. Wines like this you just KNOW. I say "buy a case and drink one a year" fairly often but every once in awhile something comes along that you can't help but say buy 2 cases and drink one a year. This is one of those wines. I really feel this has all the properties involved in being a gorgeous wine in a quarter century. This is one of those Italians you check and recheck the label to make sure that it's REALLY SANGIOVESE you're drinking and not some super-Tuscan half Merlot quarter cab plumped-up bullshit. Just a stupidly good wine, and--unlike your last girlfriend--delicious fruit streamlined and unlying--not a speck of flab on it anywhere. Gorgeous acid ricochets in all directions against chalky walls and blistering tannins--tannins doing everything possible to dissuade you from the sweet forever finish. It's a fair fight. Light, bright clear ruby, gorgeous and transparent.  Lemon zest and Bonnie Bell Lip gloss over a sultry crushed fig and German chocolate cake. Bright raspberry pours from every pore, sharpened and richened by gobs of petrichor. This is the kind of wine I wish everyone who has ever said, "I hate Chianti." could try.  The things these people do with Sangiovese does not fit into any established regional roles classically assigned to this grape, and while clean and direct and new-world professional, it also does not fit into the Americanization visible in most Super-Tuscans or IGT's with healthy proportions of Sangiovese. Refined and focused, a near-perfect drinking wine.  Chalky, clawing acidity and minerality are your first impression as that fruit-bowl hits your mouth.  Black cherry drives the middle, and a dirty little Coca-Cola introduces the intense tannin. Now... there's a good chance Napa-cab drinker is going to hate this wine.  It's just not their kind of *perfectly balanced*.  But to ME, it is perfectly balanced. To anyone who drinks Chinon and Cru Bojo and Tenerife and Sonoma Coast and Santa Ynez  Valley, THIS is what we call perfectly balanced. It smells fabulous: there's funky earth and dirt encapsulating perfect fruit. It tastes fabulous, there's a teensy old-world nod but everything surrounding is clear and direct. It looks fabulous and finishes fabulous.  I know a couple other wines from this producer have come *close*, but THIS. This I believe might just be the best 100% Sangio I've ever had in my life. And guess what, boys & girls? It is now 100% fully imported in the US. Bright staining ruby, out to a minuscule pink rim.  THE best perfume rises outa this thing. Deep candied cherry. A little greasy asphalt. Robitussin and Necco Wafers swaddled in root-beer foam and a cheery orange kumquat garnish. Don't let the blushed cheeks give you the idea this is a light and rosy wine--it is serious stuff that means business--see-sawing between fresh swirls from fruit & flower to deep and brooding. There is no deep and brooding on the tongue.  Ridiculous sharp cherry delivers bitter, savory and sweet with pin-point precision to all the right receptors.  Light on its feet while absolutely jam-packed with Sangiovese vibrancy, it brings--again, as ALWAYS is the case with this label--new deliberate interpretations of the variety balanced squarely between old-world devotions and new world miracles. The hardest part is always deciding which of their 4 Sangio's to fall in love with. Oh, and these are imported EASILY into the United States now with their own in-house distributor in WA. Bright clear goldenrod. Innertube and wet bark try to smother shrill twiggy minerality and dry suede. Coriander salted butter on a galvanized plate. In the mouth, a most unusual white... Sancerre-ish maybe? But with acid SO RIDICULOUSLY it nearly capsizes the bright, smooth entry, but is kept in check by yellow-pages and cutting-board savory depth and tomato-seed vegetal. It fades off thin and clean--fresh-scrubbed and apricot, pineapple and rose-hips--everything in tiny doses piled upon each other in a subtle stew of pure charisma. I don't know what Baja means in Italian, but this stupidly good little white is my official new oyster wine. It makes muscadet feel like chardonnay. You can't even believe how crisp it is.
