Introduction to VisIt
Today we were introduced to a visualization software, VisIt. This software reads hundreds of visual file formats including .point3D, .vtk, .ProteinDataBank, etc. These formats simple constructs like Cartesian Coordinates and basic geometric cell formats in order to represent two- and three-dimensional geometry in essentially plane text.
One of the file formats we learned the most about is the VTK format. This file format is extremely versatile and I can tell it's going to be very useful. VisIt renders this file format particularly well (it's the internal file format), and my mentor spent time explaining how the graphical constructs that the file represents work. Additionally, he pointed us to some material he has made and hosted online explaining how to use VisIt with VTK files, and other formats as well.
