Character Appreciation: The Teachers
I’m sure I’m not the only one that found the fact we straight up had to do school in this game… with dread kinda? Like no… I bought this game to go on adventures with my magical monsters I keep in little orbs to help me stop an idiot from messing up the world. Not go to school dang it!
But I admit the teachers were the whole reason I did those classes and actually had any sort of interest in that aspect of the game. All of them are unique, and had personalities that made me want to learn more about them.
I like the fact they had it be like a visual novel sort of thing where you build a friendship with the teachers, help them out and they reveal more of their story to you. But also the fact that like Clavell, these teachers honest to goodness love their jobs and care about their students. (Okay well most of them do to a degree... *cough cough*Raifort*cough cough*)
Hassel: Do I even need to explain, this man is awesome. He’s a dragon type user, is a part of a proud lineage of them, and is overall a wonderful guy. He choses teaching over anything else and is so wholesome. He’s all emotion and honesty I thinks its super sweet. He’s so passionate about art and his students that it makes him weep out of pure joy. His relationship with Brassius (seeing him call him Brassy so cute!) is sweet and as an artist it’s nice to see them building each other up.
Jacq: I Love him! I admit some of his lines were hard to read for me at first tonally. My guard was up playing the game at first so when he kept calling me “One of his Dear students” I couldn't tell if he meant it or if he was being weirdly passive aggressive. Thankfully he wasn't and even better Masters gave him a voice and now I can see without a doubt he’s a grade A sweetie. (Volo and Raifort don’t you two hurt him plz no)
Salvatore: I’ll admit a little more on the bland side compared to some of the others but you know what he also is a sweet guy. He tries to connect with his class and make it fun for you. (That pikachu lesson though sir…. can be a little frustrate) When you talk to him as a coach and he asks if his lessons have helped you and if you say yes he’s absolutely delighted and relieved to hear that. He’s also married and his romance sounds super sweet. Who knows maybe he's teaching as a trial run to see if he could handle having kids one day. He loves and cares about his students that's for sure!
Saguaro : Buff cooking man, he’s fun! First of all the fact he actually pulls his hair back into a bun to keep it from getting it into the food? Thank you.(Arven you’re my favorite of this game but if you’re making me food please put on your man bun from Masters okay? Long hair can get everywhere.) Genuinely nice guy who wants to help you learn to cook since you're living on your own. He wants you to be able to take care of yourself and your Pokémon. I also love the added fact that it’s the one class you see Arven in too because of course he wants to become a chef to help Pokémon.
Tyme: I did not boot this game up to do math m’am. This class was the worst for me but she’s honestly also really cool. Strict but it’s clear she cares. She’s not mean about it and the fact that she was originally a gym leader and her sister is a ghost type gym leader is cool lore! Plus the scene where she rips a new one on Clavell for battling on of his students is honestly just hilarious to me. She doesn't care if he's technically her superior you are not putting these kids in danger or breaking the rules SIR!
Miriam: The cool nurse who wants to explore and become an adventurer like you. You build a nice little friendship and in the end reveals she’s finally gotten the courage to go out there herself and it’s thanks to you as an inspiration. Very sweet story! (I also love her hair!)
Raifort: Honestly she’s still kind of a mystery. Out of all the teachers it’s clear she’s passionate about her field and she also seems to at least have a soft spot for you… Buuuuut she also is pretty suspicious too. (Fairly certain this woman was a grave robber before she became a teacher) That soft spot also comes from both you having interest in history and how you're skills can help her. Not as wholesome as the other teachers but still a cool character. At least she seems really happy when people appreciate history so who knows? (Raifort I am serious stay away from Jacq)
Dendra: Fun sports teacher! She’s passionate about her craft… like really, really passionate. (Are we SURE she’s not Nemona’s sister?) Anyway she’s happy to get you stronger and see you succeed and her relationship with the Tulip is also sweet! (Yes to supportive companions yes!) Plus her little arc trying to get better making sandwiches got a nice chuckle out of me.
They remind me of why I love the Galar Gym leaders. They gave them personalities and we got to see them flourish more in the game as we spent time with them. They also made the whole school aspect more bearable.
