The Renegade Youth - An indie electropop/synthpop band, or: The next installment of the Mayday Mountains AU
The Renegade Youth has a sound/aesthetic that’s distinctly different from Mayday Mountains, but the two bands rose to fame around the same time, had weirdly parallel careers, and they are often booked on the same festivals, so the media like to pit them against each other
However the two bands are great friends, they get along well and are always up for hanging out after a show
The Renegade Youth has a sound similar to M83 and Børns
Their aesthetic is very urban: citylights, rooftop parties, getting drunk on fire escapes
Eugene Lee Yang: vocalist, DJ - composes/mixes most of their songs
Keith Habersberger: vocalist, drums
Ned Fulmer: vocalist, electric guitar - lyricist
Zach Kornfeld: vocalist, keyboards
Ariel: Publicist
Becky: Manager
The four members of the band are openly in a polyamorous relationship - they even talk about it in songs because there are not enough poly songs in the world and Ned/Ariel and Keith/Becky are also a thing.
Lastly, in case you haven’t noticed, the band’s name is often abridged to its initials: TRY (because I’m a dork)
hey it's poly try guys anon again! during a study break i rewatched a bunch of videos and my god the end of the try not to die alone video is so so so good. THEY WERE APART FOR LESS THAN 24 HOURS AND JUST CLUNG TO EACH OTHER I STAN 4 MEN AND THEIR CODEPENDENCY!!!! fuc k just imagine them navigating home life while holding hands cause they're Not Ready to let go yet aaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaahhhh you’re back!!!! man seeing your asks always puts the biggest fucking smile on my face omg
also i had never watched that video!!! so i promptly did and omg
- ned and eugene dashing off into the wilderness while keith and zach linger on for one last hug is everything i needed in life and the embodiment of their entire relationship
- these hugs!!! eugene straight up tackling zach to the ground
- when zach says he wants a shower and everyone looks at him a bit mischievously you just know they’re about to shower together (again lmao)
- yesss they almost sit on top of each other in the car on the way back, holding hands and whining if one of them needs his hand for something (answering the phone, rolling the window down, whatever)
- when they get home they pile into their gigantic shower and then they go to bed because they are exhausted but ned doesn’t wanna sleep because he wants to keep looking at them and zach is like ‘guys promise me you’ll still be here when i wake up’ and eugene holds him tighter like ‘we’re not gonna let you die alone’ and keith is demolishing an entire box of cookies and spilling crumbs all over eugene and eugene can’t even bring himself to be mad about it because he missed him
poly try guys anon here, one exam down, two more to go then i'm all yours ;) anyways, imagine the boys combating jet lag at like 3 in the morning and leaning on each other until they're vaguely slow dancing in their living room with zero music and the moon as their only source of light and it's a shame they'll be too tired to remember it cause it's probably the most romantic shit they've done outside of anniversaries
hoooooly shit
you’re always ~delivering and you always come back unexpected and i LIVE FOR IT wow
it’s exactly the fact that they won’t remember it that makes it so magical. this moment only exists in this moment. no expectations, no second-guessing, nothing but four boys, their love and the moon. it’s almost as if they’re existing in a parallel dimension where nothing else matters. they’re basically sleep walking but nobody wants to go to bed because nobody wants this night to end
they end up making out lazily, sitting on the carpet, legs tangled and soft fingertips pulling at hems
poly try guys anon back again, something i tried to write but gave up when i realised i have no writing talent is a scenario where the guys see zach's fake date posts on instagram and decide hmm maybe we should spoil our boy. he's suspicious when ned takes him on a riverside picnic date the day after keith brings him around town on a sightseeing date but it only clicks when he sees eugene desperately trying to figure out how a vespa works outside his apartment the next day. he! loves! his! boys!
AAAAAAAHHH OMG BLESS YOU THIS IS GLORIOUS I’M IN LOVE
(Eugene with a Vespa is a ~look wow)
(but also, don’t sell yourself short nonnie, writing talent is not something you either have or you don’t; it’s something you develop by practicing and reading. you seem to have great ideas, that’s always a good stepping point :D don’t get discouraged and if you want, my chatbox is always wide open if you have questions / need advice / need honest opinions / need cheerleading)
just watched the try guys try boob weights video, them all sleeping in the same bed at the start gave me such warm poly feels aaahhhhhh! <3 <3 <3 <3 (sorry i just had to gush about it they're so softe)
Aaaah omg babiiiies 😍😍😍
listen poly try guys is ~my jam bless you for bringing this to my attention 😘😘😘
idk if you still want fluffy headcanons but here's one for poly try guys anyway, keith will sing silly little jingles to the other guys (like the way he sings to eugene in the facials video), especially if he wants to cheer them up. eugene and zach act like it's embarrassing but secretly love it, ned will usually sing back something twice as silly
adsgsak I’m always up for fluffy headcanons, especially when it involves poly!
and omg I relate to this so much because my husband constantly comes up with silly jingles this is adorable bless you 😍😍😍
for the prompt thing, would you consider writing poly try guys????
Polyamorous Rave Sluts
by Kelsey D*rragh, for The Buzz Mag
On the rise since 2014, The Renegade Youth have conquered the synthpop scene and the queer community with their irresistible anthems and their unwavering activism for queer rights.
Today, the four of them welcome me to their West Hollywood home for lunch and a little heart to heart.
Casual is the first word that comes to mind when I walk into their house. Simple, cozy, so unmistakably them – you’d never guess a three-times Grammy winner band lives here. Until they give me the tour of their in-house state-of-the-art recording studio, where you can see they spared no expense.
Zach: Only the best of the best is good for Eugene.
Keith: Which is why he’s with us, if you know what I mean.
Eugene rolls his eyes, but you can see how fond of them he really is, behind his tough, no-nonsense exterior.
Ned is the only one missing so far, and we find him in the kitchen, mixing a batch of lingonberry sangria, under the intense gaze of their four dogs: Bowie, Bean, Emma and Pesto.
The Buzz: Four grown men and four dogs in one house, doesn’t it get a bit tight?
Ned: Not if you like to cuddle!
He drops to his knees and is quickly engulfed in a puppy pile, each dog waiting for his kiss or belly rub.
We have lunch outside, on their rooftop terrace overlooking West Hollywood, and I ask them about their relationship.
Zach: We’ve been together since college and that’s when we started DJing, at various parties on campus.
Eugene: They used to call us Polyamorous Rave Sluts cause we were pretty much up for anything.
They reminisce with a laugh.
The Buzz: Your brand hasn’t changed much since then, has it? This is still pretty accurate.
Keith: We feel it’s important to be ourselves, even though it’s not something usually portrayed by the media –
Zach: Because it’s not something usually portrayed by the media.
Ned: Exactly. We want to pave the way for every single person who one day finds themselves terrified by being in love with more than one person. We want to open the discussion about polyamory.
Eugene: Like, it’s okay to be a slut. It’s okay to enjoy different people in different ways.
Zach: We especially wanted to make music about it, because if you listen to 95% of the music out there it’s about love between one man and one woman. We’re starting to see more queer artists out there –
Keith: Shoutout to Mayday Mountains!
Zach: Yes! But most of it is still monogamous. For the longest time, the four of us didn’t have a song we could relate to our relationship, like how most couples have a song.
Eugene: We had to write it ourselves, and that was how Nocturnal was born.
The Buzz: Nocturnal was, for many fans, where it all began. Tell me, was it hard to be known as the polyamorous band? Did you ever want to branch out, be recognized for something else?
Ned: The synthpop and electropop crowd is a really open-minded family, and they accepted us with open arms and hearts, and like we said, polyamorous people have been clamoring for representation for so long, so it’s nice to give them what they want. As for the haters, well, they’re obviously not who we have in mind when we write songs!
Keith: And really, who’s on the cover of The Buzz? Us or the haters? I think there’s a clear winner here!
On these wise words and among the laughs of his boyfriends, we toast to the success of their latest album, N.E.O.N., which you can find in stores on August 12.

poly try guys anon, back once more, i'm glad you're enjoying these so much! so imagine they do something similar to the "we have your wife" note they gave ned during the distracted driving video but more elaborate like leaving "we've kidnapped your boyfriends better follow these super complicated treasure hunt of clues to find them ;)" for him to find when he wakes up. ned busts into the holding room 20 minutes after his alarm goes off, sweaty, dirty, screaming "WHERE ARE MY BOYS????"
I still haven’t watched this video I really should
Omg Ned being so protective of his boys I’m sobbing you give me LIFE honey 😍😍😍
