The Pompaia, held during the month of Maimaikterion (November-December, 11 November in 2024), honored Zeus Meilichios. Like the Thargelia, the Pompaia had a theme of purification (Parker, Polytheism 211); the festival featured the fleece of a ram which was sacrificed to Zeus Meilichios and carried out of the city, acting as a scapegoat and taking evil and impurity away with it. As the season of winter begins, we give offerings, as the ancients gave a white sheep and carried the fleece around the city to cleanse the city, to Zeus along with Hermes to pray for good winter weather!

Δεκάτη Ὑστέρα- Δεκάτη Φθίνοντος/ Μετεικὰς- Ἀμφιδεκάτη, XXI day From today's sunset: twenty-first day of Maimakterion. The twenty-first day is always sacred to Athena. Since it is not known the exact date of the festival Pompaia in honor of Zeus Meilichios and Alexikakos, and we just know that it falls during the last ten days of this month (φθίνοντος Μαιμακτηριῶνος μηνὸς), we tentatively have assigned it to today, the first day of the last decad.
