Upon disembarking the 2-hour ferry ride from Dar Es Salaam, we taxi'd it to the Chavda hotel, located in Stonestown & then headed to Pongwe, one of Zanzibar's beaches that is "close to picture-postcard paradise." The beach was absolutely gorgeous. I've never physically seen a nicer beach - therapeutic white sand, warm turquoise water, a wooden fishing boat anchored in the distance & blue skies. Looked just like the Corona commercial - straight paradise! After jumping in the water, we enjoyed a meal at the beach hut while watching the Paraguay v Japan game.
For dinner, we checked the Forodhani Gardens - Stonetown's waterfront street-food market. For about $3, you can eat like a king! Anything from your typical chicken & beef to the experimental tastes of barracuda or shark. Grab a mug of sugar cane juice too. Top it off with a chocolate & banana Zanzibar pizza for dessert & you're smiling!
Wednesday, we headed off to Changuu (a prison Island that never was) via a boatie (pronouced "boat-tee"; a wooden canopy-covered fisherman's boat) named Jah Glory. On the island, we got to touch & feed a colony of Aldabra giant tortoises. One of the tortoises was 183 years old - one of the 1st 4 original tortoises imported from Seychelles. It was such an awesome experience to spend time with these ginormous turtles! We walked around the island, spent some time on the beach, then headed back in time to see the sun set.
Thursday. We went on the spice tour & visited the Anglican Cathedral, which occupies the site of Africa's slave market. We were showed the dark & tiny slave chambers, where 75 people were housed for weeks without food or water. At the altar of the church is the old site of the whipping post & the burial site of Bishop Edward Steere.
Friday. This was basically our last full day, so we decided to make it productive. Got some shopping done, sent out postcards & did some laundry. After, we had a couple of beers on the beach & watched the Netherlands beat Brazil. Now, we're watching the Uruguay v Ghana game go into penalties, so Im just gonna end this post. haha.
