In my experience one of the more common challenges trainers face when trying to reach their goals is visualizing smaller approximations. During my last two weeks here in Indonesia we have been emphasizing the importance of focusing on the process, not so much getting to the end goal. If your animal is calm and relaxed with each approximation you will reach your end goal faster than pushing for the end result too soon. This pony at the start of the session was showing aggressive behavior towards people and haltering. We started with just offering carrots, then targeting ever so slightly, then adding some movement to the target. We then made a big loop with the lead and used the target to teach him to place his nose through the opening. We gradually made the loop smaller. Over time we will transition this to a larger halter and then one just the right size. Even more rewarding was his change in demeanor. He became a calm and relaxed pony. We have had so many single session transformations here. I can’t wait to share these educational experiences in great detail at www.animaltrainingfundamentals.com #horsetraining #ponytraining #haltertraining #targettraining (at Bali Safari Park)
Oh I see that look in your eye, Allegra. Working with Allegra on targeting and standing calmly by the trainer as foundation behaviors. However someone gets a little distracted. Future goals include teaching her to voluntarily participate in hoof care. #horsetraining #ponytraining #positivereinforcement #clickerhorse #zooanimaltraining #targeting @furuviksparken (at Furuviksparken)
