The gym, the pool and open water swimming
1/15/2023. Sunday 9;22pm
Went swimming in the gym’s pool. It’s a different experience than open water swimming. It’s warm water and I can see where I’m going. It’s true swimming.
Open water swimming is an experience. It’s a cold water gauntlet. It expands the being. And, its participants are brothers.
The gym is the court house without the lawyer drag. Sometimes kind, sometimes harsh and competitive. The body doesn’t know. It craves the movement. It wants to thrive.

Open water swimming is, in my case, swimming in the Ocean in Aquatic Park in San Fransisco, California.
I’m 68 and in the gym twice a day and the ocean once a week most of the time.
The water in the Ocean in Aquatic Park is murky enough that it’s hard to see where you are going. The water temperature now I think is in the low 50 degrees. I swam about a half mile in Aquatic park earlier today. Before the swim, I did leg extensions and the rowing machine at a gym in Manteca, California. After the swim, I did 35 minutes on the treadmill at a gym in Modesto, California.
I’m a criminal defense attorney and am in court most week days.
