The High and the Mighty
A fine set of fetlocks! by National Library of Ireland on The Commons Captain W.J. Baird, Aide de Camp to the Lord Lieutenant sits astride a really fine looking horse in this carefully posed image from the Poole Collection. Now we know the name of the soldier so now we want to know is the name of the horse??? Photographer: A. H. Poole Collection: Poole Photographic Collection, Waterford Date: 1915 - 1917, most likely 1917 NLI Ref: POOLEWP 2734 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie https://flic.kr/p/2k7Pcon
An outdoors man taken indoors! by National Library of Ireland on The Commons What a lovely way to start the week, photographically speaking that is. A fine portrait commissioned by Mr. A.E West of Kilcoroney, Bray shows a man in outdoor tweeds with his cap and walking stick in the prime of life. Who was Mr. West and what might the connection be between Bray and Waterford? On posting the letter from the Earls O'Neill and O'Donnell on Friday we were looking forward to translations and information. We were delighted to be able contribute to the education of that most erudite Flickroonie John Spooner, who was introduced to that old Irish tradition of cogging his latin! Photographer: A. H. Poole Collection: Poole Photographic Studio, Waterford Date: ca. 4 September 1915 NLI Ref: POOLEWP 2624 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie https://flic.kr/p/2jBUfre
Lord, Lady and Rover Castletown by National Library of Ireland on The Commons I love to see a family with a dog front and centre! Lord and Lady Castletown in an unusual pose with the lady standing while the gentleman sits and caresses the dog. And what a dog? A poodle with an elaborate, almost covid hairstyle and the task this morning is to discover the name of the said Poodle the most original of which will receive a virtual sticky bun with extra icing! Photographer: A. H. Poole Collection: Poole Photographic Studio, Waterford Date: between ca. 1901 and 1954 1927 NLI Ref: POOLEWP 2648 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie https://flic.kr/p/2jzuiSc
Trophies for the prettiest cows and horses in the show? by National Library of Ireland on The Commons This fine collection of trophies is described by the catalogue as “Agricultural Society’s Challenge Cups” but I suspect that they are not for the prettiest Cows and Horses. Which Society was it, and do the fine trophies still exist today? Thank you all for yesterday’s work, and especially the Beachcomber’s final comment on Jack the Ripper. I imagine most of us would develop a fever if we were approached by a man wielding a knife and shouting “I am Jack the Ripper”! Photographer: A. H. Poole Collection: Poole Photographic Collection, Waterford Date: ca. 6 July 1921 NLI Ref: POOLEWP 2923 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie https://flic.kr/p/2jybZnY
Seo é "Seachtain na Gaeilge" agus seo é "Díleagra don Domhnal Ó Cathaláin. by National Library of Ireland on The Commons Seo é "Seachtain na Gaeilge" or this is Irish Language Week and all those who can are asked to use the language as much and as often as they can. For that reason it is appropriate and fortuitous that today we have a beautiful illuminated address in that language from the Poole Collection. For those of you younger than Morning Mary you may never have used the script on the illustration with the accents and letter formats but it does have a special beauty for those of us who did! P.S. Wee public service announcement! We're a friendly and inclusive bunch here at the National Library of Ireland Flickr stream. We love the research and the to-ing and fro-ing of good-natured arguing that goes on around our photographs. However, I deleted a comment under yesterday's photo – something that we hardly ever need to do – because of an F-word expletive. So please CONTINUE to keep it clean.
