Everyone talks about how like his mother Jiang Cheng is, but really that's only half right. Outwardly Jiang Cheng embodies his mother, he's loud, rude, aggressive and bitter.
Buuuut few people talk about how like his father he is in his inability to express his feelings.
Jiang Fengmian diverts, side steps and outright avoids emotional conflicts. He can't take his emotional vulnerabilities being attacked, especially by his wife who is able to get at them best.
Who does that remind you of?
Jiang Cheng got the worst of both his parents. His mother's anger and his father's emotional constipation.
Jiang Cheng loves hard and wholly, but only with a certain number of people. He's not Wei Wuxian who loves widely but carelessly. Jiang Cheng's heart is incredibly vulnerable, he has no idea how to love without it hurting. He longs for a close emotional connection, but he's too afraid to risk it.
So he wears his anger and contempt on his sleeve, just like his mother, to avoid anyone getting too close to touch his raw wound of a soul, even though that's what he wants.
His mother saw everything she doesn't like in her husband in Jiang Cheng and his father saw everything he hated in his mother in his son.
Jiang Cheng never had a chance.
