this is from the third fic in the steady as she goes series.

cw: vomiting, vomit cleanup. Hints of child abuse/neglect.

The caller ID says Rudolph West and Barry's brow furrows.

"Hello?"

"Hi, Uncle Barry!" chirps Wally, and Barry smiles in relief.

"What's up, kiddo? You doing okay?" Wally launches into a recap of things that happened to him during their time apart. It’s a welcome respite from dealing with his own problems.

"…and he said I was out, but I wasn't!" Barry smiles again at Wally's enthusiasm, but turns to worry when Wally begins to cough. A thick, wet sound that makes Barry's chest hurt listening to it. The sound turns to retching and Barry is out of his seat running before his brain catches up.

He finds himself outside of the West residence, hoping against hope that Wally's parents aren't home. Neither of their cars are in the driveway and there isn't any activity in or around the house. He looks around to make sure there aren't any neighbors looking before he phases through the door.

"Wally?" No answer. He looks throughout the house until he finds Wally in the living room on the floor, face flushed red with tears streaming down his cheeks, shaking as he tries to clean up a pool of vomit from the carpet. "Wally!"

"Uncle Barry?" Wally looks up at him, confused at the sight of him. The confusion is overtaken by upset as he tries to clean the vomit again, more tears streaming down his face. "They’re gonna be so mad at me…"

Barry grabs a washcloth and kneels next to Wally, gently taking his face and wiping tears and vomit from his face. He takes Wally in his arms and lifts him, bringing him to his room and tucking him under the covers.

"But the carpet," hiccups Wally, sniffling. Fresh tears slide down his face. Barry wipes them away, frowning.

"Don't worry about it. I'll clean it."

"You will?"

"Of course." Barry strokes Wally's hair. "Just get some rest, okay?"

"Will you tell me a story?"

"Let me clean up the mess and I'll tell you one."

Barry flits to the kitchen to grab gloves, a sponge, and soap. He picks up the chunks of food with one hand, making a face, then blots soap onto the carpet, hoping it won't stain. He rinses out the sponge and tries to get the soap out of the carpet. It's wet, but passable. He grabs another washcloth and runs cool water over it, then goes back to Wally, placing it on his forehead.

Wally opens his eyes to look at Barry. He looks so tired. More tired than any eleven year old should.

"Did I ever tell you about when I met the other Flash?" Wally perks up at that, green eyes widening with excitement.

"There's another Flash? That's so cool."

Barry smiles. "Very cool."

He tells Wally about accidentally vibrating into the other universe where he met Jay Garrick, the hero he'd read about growing up. The whole thing had been so surreal; meeting his hero, fighting bad guys with him.

What he doesn't tell Wally is how flustered he'd been at seeing Jay in the flesh. At the time he thought it was just hero worship, but now he realizes part of it was that Jay was handsome and older. Charming in his own way. He reminded him a bit of Hal. Barry quickly shuts the thought down. He doesn't want to think about Hal right now.

Thinking about Dick in cryo and hypothermia...

What if something went wrong during a Titans mission? Stranded for a bit somewhere cold, rescue took a little while? And Dick ends up going into cryosleep? Talons look pretty dead when in that mode, right?

The rest of the titans freaking out, especially since they still aren't really sure what species or what flavor of meta Nightwing is, and they don't know what to do... (Let them be somewhere where they can't get in touch with the Bats to ask)

All of them convinced Nightwing died, horrified and mourning, and trying to figure out how they will break the news to Batman and Robin...

And halfway through the discussion the 'corpse' just sits up.

Lmao Wally would deadass be cradling Dick’s head so gently and heaving big, gut wrenching sobs and then Dick would just— sit up. Blink.

“Why are you crying so loud?”

And everyone just starts screaming.

(One of the Titans totally tries sneaking Dick’s pulse once they’ve all gone to sleep— just to be sure Dick really is alive and they didn’t dream it— and promptly starts screaming again when there’s none.

Dick is cranky about being woken up. Going to sleep without Jason in the nest is hard enough, did they HAVE to wake him up????

He softens significantly though and explains that, no, he does have a pulse. It’s just really, REALLY slow. And a couple of seconds held to his wrist isn’t gonna do it mate, sorry.)
