Hear No Evil - My Character is deaf

As though someone had muffled every sound in the world, Zig couldn't hear a thing. Not the wind whipping around the cold air, not the people walking by who were in a deep discussion, absolutely nothing. But why...?

"Hello?" He assumed he spoke by the way he felt his lips move, but no sound was produced. Even as he tried raising his voice until his throat got sore, Zig couldn't hear himself speak or even breathe for that matter. He had to be breathing for sure, since he'd obviously be dead by now.

...Why- Well, my thoughts still work, but... why can't I hear anything else?
