Wonderland were an Irish girlband, formed by Louis Walsh and Westlife band-member Kian Egan. The band were put together after auditions were held for five females in July 2008. Its five members were Jodi Albert, Sharon Condon, Corrina Durran, Leigh Learmont, and Kasey Smith. Wonderland's debut single "Not a Love Song" was released on 25 February 2011 in Ireland and on 6 March 2011 in the United Kingdom.
Tokenism in Pop Groups: Part 1
So I was thinking the other day about how I've loved pop music for the longest time and one thing that just never seems to change is the amount of tokenism there are in groups and whenever there was just a hint of diversity, the audience couldn't "connect" with the group, yeah....ok. The mainstream groups were/are mostly predominantly White and then there's the one token member to represent "other" groups or in other words, any other groups that are "different" from the "norm". This of course applies to pop culture in general (North American and Euro pop cultures is what I will focus on). As an example, here's an excerpt of how tokenism works in TV shows:
There are addendums sometimes, add-ons like “I’m happy to see POC characters if the plot calls for it” or “why put in a black dude in the cast just because?” Understand what is being said there: the story that is universal is white. The default is always white. The POC character only makes it in there “when the role calls for it”. Let that sink in for a moment. Our presence in popular culture (and in non-stereotypical roles) must always be justified, but whiteness exists as the basic template. Our place at the table has to be earned. And ain’t that a kick in the teeth?

When your life is affected by racial issues, you can't help but notice these things. But there are also other type of tokenisms based on ethnicity, looks, etc.. to show diversity and sometimes it looks forced. I must say even though I still like pop music, it is getting boring to see the same formula being applied since forever so that's why I'm more in favor of (more or less) diverse groups such as The Saturdays and Danity Kane. I will give examples of common used tokenisms in the next posts. Stay tuned ;-)
