If you haven't had the pleasure of watching an Eastern Cottonwood (populus deltoides) release its seeds and "snow" in May, then here's your chance! It's a magical experience to be in the midst of 💚
Every year, the Eastern Cottonwood releases thousands of fluffy seeds into the air, for about a month. This is how it got its name "cottonwood", because it looks like clumps of cotton EVERYWHERE. They get in your hair, in your mouth, in your car, and in your food.
A Large Eastern Cottonwood Tree
This cottonwood looks a bit wider than my car. I’m not the biggest fan of cottonwoods because of the fuzzy seeds but these sure do get massive near water, which makes them quite impressive. This one is in the floodplain of the Mississippi River.

absolutely massive eastern cottonwood leaf i picked up on my walk home, the flat petiole looks so wonky at this scale (PHB for scale, blade length is 15.5 cm and width is 16 cm!!!)

Cottonwoods are tall tall tall but their twigs break in the wind and it’s been windy for weeks
It’s better this way anyways, it’s like the tree decides for you how many buds you should gather (but still, I feel like I should leave some, because things on the ground are not just garbage they are future soil)
The buds are laid out to dry for a day or two, then into a jar of oil.
